“We love camp.....The kids didn’t
want it to end.”
“Bravo! We had a great, great time and
will return for sure.” -LAHC Evaluation Comment |
Latin
American Heritage Camp in Colorado is one of the few camps of its kind in the
country, designed specifically for families with children adopted from Central
and South America, as well as those of Latino heritage
adopted within the United States. It is one of ten camps facilitated by the
highly respected Colorado Heritage Camps, Inc.
Latino American counselors serve as role models and mentors to the children as they participate with them in cultural classes while adult family members attend cultural and adoption related workshops ranging from Latino cooking and customs to the blessings and challenges inherent in our adoptive families. LAHC also encourages young adult Latino adoptees to join us as counselors to gain a deeper understanding of their culture while sharing their own adoption stories with each other and their younger counterparts.
This year's camp will again be held in the beautiful Colorado Rockies at the YMCA Snow Mountain
Ranch facility near Winter Park, CO www.ymcarockies.org -
a family vacation destination in itself. Registration materials will be going out this Winter, so NOW
is the time to request registration information to be placed on our
mailing list.
Additionally,
young adult Latino adoptees have the opportunity to attend camp as counselors or
workshop facilitators, and gain the same cultural appreciation and awareness
as their younger counterparts, while sharing their own adoption experiences.
We also welcome members of Colorado's rich Latino community
who help us keep the camp culturally relevant each and every year as counselors,
workshop facilitators, activity consultants, and more! Plans for 2010:
“Latin American Adventures” is our 2010 Latin American Heritage
Camp theme. We will explore many cultural adventures from various Latin American
countries. Our camp will run from Thursday afternoon, June 24th through Sunday
morning, June 27th.
Back by popular demand, our Thursday Night’s Dinner will be
offered again this year from 6pm to 7 pm in the Kiva. One of our own camp
parents, a chef in real life, is organizing this event. We will have an array
of Latino
foods,
including
posole, a mini Taco Bar with a variety of fixings to please vegetarians and
meat eaters alike, along with churros ( a yummy Latino pastry) for dessert.
There will be an extra charge for this meal. You can preregister on
the web site . This will be a great time for both our new and returning
families to meet and connect.
Cultural adventures in the preschool/ elementary program have endless
possibilities for fun, cultural identity building activities for this
age group! For our 3 years old campers, through our 5th graders, we’ll
have age appropriate workshops and activities that may include:
Cooking with Cocoa
Mayan Archaeology Adventure
Pok-a-Tok - a Meso-American cosmic ball game
Soccer
Latin Dancing
Spanish Drama
Making Warrior Masks
Dias de los Muertos activity for older elementary children
HeArt Talks-age appropriate art activities for each age group around
the topic of adoption and identity.
Some adventures for both the Middle School and High School campers to
explore will be:
More than Me ( see http://www.heritagecamps.org/morethanme.html for
info on this trademark program of Colorado Heritage Camps)
Adoption Discussion in small groups
YMCA of the Rockies outdoor adventures
Latin Dancing & Music
Creative Adventures, and more…
The Middle School campers may also be participating in The LAHC Amazing
Race, a fun relay activity. The High Schoolers will again go river rafting
as it was a huge success last year. Cooking classes will be offered for
the high school teens and possibly the younger teens.
Of course, there will be guided opportunities to socialize and just
be together for these age groups, which is their main purpose for attending
camp at this point, and we well aware of that!
Adults will have the opportunity to explore many adventurous workshops.
Some workshop ideas being thought about so far include:
Latin Dancing (due to popular demand)
Latin American Cooking
Adult Adoptee Panel
Transracial workshop with Astrid Dabbeni (learn more about Astrid at:
http://www.adoptionmosaic.org/?page_id=51)
An adventurous Latino Craft workshop
A parenting workshop
Outdoor Hike
Thursday night’s optional dinner will be provided again this year
(no pot luck) for an additional fee. This new concept was a big hit at
camp last year! This is a great time to get to know each other, find
old friends, and make new ones!
We are looking into offering adventurous activities for the entire family
to enjoy for our Friday night experience. On Saturday night we will have
our exciting fiesta with Latin dancing. Our entertainment will be wonderful,
as always, though details are yet to come.
We hope you and your family will be able to join us this summer for
our grand Latin American Heritage Camp adventure. Mark the dates (June
24-27) on your calendar now and check back on this website later on for
more details.

We look forward to seeing your
family at camp!
Though
we have generated very strong support from Colorado's Latin American community,
we are always looking for more volunteers to
work with the kids, teach workshops, cook meals, etc., and to be counselors at
camp.
As a non-profit 501 C(3) organization, Colorado Heritage Camp is always
seeking financial assistance to help keep camp costs reasonable for families,
and still provide an outstanding program. If you'd
like to help, please go to the Donations section
of this web site, and thank you very much in advance.
We are also in need of
donations of frequent flier miles to
help defray costs of out of state speakers. If you have miles you
can donate please email us at info@heritagecamps.org
We hope to see you at camp this summer. For further information, please contact
us.
